HOUSE OF CHAPPAZ: the unusual Valencian gallery

Following the art contemporary vision of its director, Ismäel Chappaz (Valencia, 1982), one of the youngest Valencian gallerists, House of Chappaz (formerly Espai Tactel), is a space that embraces different practices linked to art, music and design, broadening the concept of traditional art gallery and taking a stance as an important location in international reputation fairs, such as ARCO, Art Brussels and Art Cologne for more than a decade.

With two locations in Spain (Flat in Valencia and Basement in Barcelona, codirected by Ferran Mitjans and Oriol Armengou, founders of the Toormix design agency), the Project produces a statement with topics such as the vindication of the queer activism through the exhibition Contact / Together again, or the modernity aesthetics, with their book and decline around the Valencian movement, with the exhibition Una cruzada de pasiones en Valencia [A Crusade of Passions in Valencia]. Its exhibition spaces have also become collaboration spaces, resulting from a common and revolutionary language based on experimentation, where the artists and the public vibrate in synch.

Through a tireless work, House of Chappaz has managed to take contemporary art expressions to a new level, by managing to connect generations and organizations to whom art said nothing, refreshing the art perception and waking up in them new ways to understand it.

“We have to understand the galleries as hybrid spaces that do not lack a commercial role, but which have always been exhibition spaces, where daring proposals have been developed, gathering and reflection places, and a bet on culture. These are expository spaces where there is a never-ending Schedule, and a work and support network for artists, which also has the role for the citizens. It is not just for Fine Arts or Art History majors, as one might think, but for any person who wants to approach and be part of this learning and enjoyment process.”

Through his projects, Ismäel Chappaz has never stopped believing in Valencia. This is a city with the potential to be the place where initiatives aiming at excellence can be produced through new ways to boost culture. In a similar sense as STAYINGVALENCIA, the Valencian hotel chain with boutique hotels, tourist apartments and design restaurants located throughout Valencia, where people can experience everything as locals, we always put ourselves on the side of the cultural fabric and give a voice and space to local talent in order to bring new horizons and locate Valencia as a benchmark city.
